>> i'm chris cato. you may have heard the thunder rumbling through. let's check in with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz making a morning appearance for us. good morning glenn. >> good morning. northern delaware has really been getting pounded over the last hour or two. that is moving into south jersey. we have a first alert out for not only what's happening now but for what's going to happen later today and again tomorrow. flood advisory for new castle county until 6:15. you can see on the wider view that cluster of thunderstorms in new castle county. they have been getting hit hard right along i-95 and just to the south of it and you can see crossing the delaware river, delaware bay into new jersey now now. getting some very heavy rain. to the northeast, philadelphia getting moderate rain. northern suburbs, very little.

although they got their share last night. not everybody is getting it now. not everybody is going to get it. but the main threat that we have for any severe weather is for heavy rain for some of these tropical like downpours that are going to be occurring. 72 degrees at 6:00 a.m. with the showers and storms but we're going to have a lull as we go through the morning and then the showers and storms will redevelop this afternoon. again, some of those could be extremely heavy. now let's check out the effects on traffic. jessica boyington has that. >> thank you be glenn. yes, we are out on the schuylkill expressway where we're starting to see some traffic through the area but not a whole lot. we are still dealing with some ponding and wet roadways there as well. this is right around girard avenue. if you're heading into the center city area from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway still only about a 13 minute trip. no problems headed westbound as well towards the blue route.

as we check on west conshohocken we're still dealing with the street being closed closed. we do have an accident on the new jersey turnpike on the northbound side. it's taking out the left-hand lane which is 541. if you have a flight this morning, we are dealing with small delays in the philadelphia international airport. check with your airlines to see if that affects your commute. chris? 5:02. for a couple of hours we're following breaking news out of delaware county. fire hit several row homes. several people displaced. "nbc 10's" jesse gary is there. the rain is falling we see that. you learn more people are impacted than fire investigators first thought, right? >> reporter: chris, the total has been under from 9 to 17. 17 residents displaced because

of this row home fire. currently firefighters are on the roof. they've been redeployed to the roof. they are searching for what the chief says something that could be smoldering or burning again. so they're using cutting tools to cut down into the roof. they either want to put more water in or remove some debris because they're worried that could start the fire again despite all the rain we're having. i've been talking to some of those who have been displaced. they told me they woke up this morning to the smell of smoke. >> ran out the house, i looked to the left. big smoke. i just hurried up and ran out. just had to hurry up and run out the street and got everything. >> reporter: a lot of residents saying they believe they have lost everything. fire officials say there are no injuries to either firefighters or those who are displaced. we will update you on the scene in the next 30 minutes. new overnight, this fire on north street in pottstown. a firefighter was taken to the hospital after he was hit by some sort of object while battling the fire. the injuries are not life threatening. he tells us the building was being investigated. the fire is under control and investigators are still looking for the cause. the time is 5:04. 69 degrees outside. new from overnight, a patriot act change that just went into effect impacts the government's access to your phone records. five hours ago at midnight a counter terrorism measure expired that allowed the national security agency to collect american phone records in bulk. they failed to extend that program and several others after republican rand paul stood in the way. the bulk collection program is likely to be revived in a matter of days but with some changes. we have some new information on john kerry now. the secretary of state is scheduled to return to boston today to get treatment for that broken leg that he suffered. he broke a leg yesterday morning while bicycling through the

french alps. after consulting with doctors kerry initially decided to delay his return to the u.s. he stayed overnight in switzerland. a local doctor not involved in kerry's care says he should be okay. >> if it's a simple fracture one that doesn't involve a lot of work and they can fix easily he may be in the hospital a few days, up on his feet and walking quickly. may be back to work and travel within about six weeks. >> kerry had to candlened cancel the rest of his four nation trip including a conference on combatting isis. the tributes continue to pour in following the death of beau biden. vai sikahema is live in the digital operations center. vai, today flags will remain at half staff for the state's native son. tell us more. >> reporter: the outpouring of support for the bidens as well as the citizens of the first

state is a testament to how popular beau biden was not only in his home state and in washington, d.c. where his father serves as vice president. beau died saturday at the age of 46 after a two-year long battle with brain cancer. biden served two terms as attorney general in delaware. he once planned to run as governor. he was a popular politician and decorated iraq war veteran. he was a devoted husband and father. >> delaware's a better place because of beau. our country's a better place because of beau and the world is a better place because of beau biden. >> he didn't want to rest on his past laurels. i think that was part of why he didn't run for senate and wanted to run for governor. >> reporter: it's clear had he run for either of those positions it is likely he would have won. beau biden was hospitalized early in the month of may. at the time the vice president's

office did not declare or mention why he had been hospitalized, but clearly the biden's a very private family. we'll continue to monitor the situation and bring you more information as we get it. live in the digital operations center vai sikahema "nbc 10." 5:07. the case of a cape may county child missing for 24 years is about to get some new life today. cape may county prosecutor's office along with the middletownship police officer and the fbi are holding a news conference today to announce a partnership in the case of mark himebaugh. he was 11 when he vanished in 1991. all right. today montgomery county here's a warning for those of you who live near the nuclear plant in limerick. you can expect to hear sirens going off around 2:00 this afternoon. it's just a test. it will only last for three minutes. it's one of two tests conducted at that facility every time this year. inspectors will be studying

a roof of a fire house that has mold problems. mold is forming as you see here on ceilings and near air ducts. firefighters union says the firefighters are experiencing shortness of breath migraines, dry eyes. the fire officials have closed off the living quarters and set up tents next to the fire station. 5:08. the atlantic fire season begins today. forecasters calling for a below normal season. they are warning everyone against the coast to warn against complacency. it only takes land fall from one to cause a disaster. now is the time to review your homeowner's insurance policy. hurricane season runs through the end of november. there are more flooding concerns in dallas after the wettest month on record in that state. at least 30 people have died due to the dangerous flood waters as the hardest hit areas begin to dry out, some streets have been closed and could affect the morning traffic. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with chief

meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. >> on the other side of the country, allen town didn't even get an inch of rain the entire month of may. moderate drought there. now we're going to have the opposite problems. very heavy rain with showers and thunderstorms, localized flooding. that's why we have a first alert out for today and tomorrow. we have rain in and around the area now. it's a wet start to the day. it's not going to rain all day though. 71 degrees. southwest at 6 miles an hour. it's pretty cool up to the north. 61 in allentown. 62 in trenton, but it's 71 in philadelphia and even warmer than in dover, delaware where it's going to get well into the 80s this afternoon. mid 80s. you can see this cluster of showers and storms moving through, but you also see the dryer air back to the west. so conditions are starting to improve across new castle county in delaware. it's really been hit hard here.

salem county cumberland county camden county getting hit hard with this rain. more through the pennsylvania turnpike there isn't a whole lot. so we're here. once you get this cluster moving through, conditions will improve for a while. you can see this in the hour-by-hour future cast things pretty quiet by 9:00 10:00 this morning. then the showers redevelop this afternoon. some of those very heavy. thunderstorms, gusty winds. the downpours, that's a big deal here. look at that this evening. tremendous area of showers and storms as we go through the afternoon and into tonight and then another round coming tomorrow. showers and storms some of them heavy. temperatures range from 75 in northern sections to 85 south of philadelphia. and for the seven-day forecast, nobody gets to 80 tomorrow.

it's cool with the wind off the ocean with more rain coming. things get a little quieter wednesday, thursday. then they start to warm up again friday. all right, glenn. 11 minutes after 5:00 now. some of you will encounter pretty heavy rain on the roads now. especially northern delaware as we saw on the radar. >> let's see where there might be trouble spots. jessica boyington is watching trouble spots. >> we're taking a look at the vine street expressway. you can see the drive times are still doing okay. still under 5 minutes headed westbound towards the schuylkill expressway. currently no problems. you can see some ponding and wet conditions on the roads. definitely you can see it over here underneath the street lightheaded eastbound towards 95. use some caution. we have proved that the roadways are slippery and wet out there. as we take a drive into new jersey out in berlin still dealing with that sinkhole repair emergency repair there on the white horse pike westbound ramp to haddon avenue. local detours posted. follow those and you'll be fine.

accident scene taking out the left-hand lane. 5:41 which is there. currently no problems with a good alternate there. take septa or new jersey transit. showers moving through the region. heavier rain on the way for later today. we'll keep you updated on the timing. plus a 9-year-old girl struggling to recover after a car slams into an airport terminal. and people recovering after an air conditioning unit fell 28 stories from a crane working in new york city.

5:15. authorities say a teenager stabbed a man to death over a cell phone. it happened yesterday evening on the 3100 block of berkeley drive over east falls. they got over an argument over the cell phone and he stabbed the man to death. two robbers still on the loose after police say they shot a man in the stomach and robbed him yesterday. the victim had just gotten out of his car on north 18th street when the robbers approached him, shot him. the victim is a 52-year-old man. he's in critical condition. the suspects were last seen heading to cheltenham. doctors have removed the bullet from a 13-year-old girl. she was sitting on the front steps of her home in kensington friday night when two men were running down atlantic street

shooting at each other. doctors removed a bullet that went into the girl's right side. she is recovering. police are still looking for the shooters. 5:16. funerals will be held for the washington, d.c., family that was murdered. they were bound, threatened and killed before the house was set on fire. daren wentint is charged in the slaying. the motive is still unclear. at least three people are hurt after a porch crashed into a terminal at los angeles international airport yesterday. the car slammed into a wall went into a utility room. a 9-year-old girl who was a pedestrian is in critical condition. the driver and pass sentences sen ger are hospitalized but expected to be okay. the driver mistook the gas peddle for the brake. 10 people are recovering from minor injuries this morning after an air conditioner fell several stories in new york city. the unit fell from a crane and

crashed to the ground in manhattan. the unit sheared the side of a 30 story building as it fell. the crane was lifting the unit to the top floor when the cable snapped. 8 pedestrians and two construction workers were hit by flying debris but everybody is okay. 5:17. police in mount pocono are looking for the person who apparently left a dog for dead. on friday they found the dog tied to a pole. they say it was hog tied. all four paws were tied together. they rushed the animal to a vet. she's now being treated for severe case of mange. police are looking for the dog's owner. animal rescue workers say they are seeing an overwhelming amount of abuse cases. 5:17. new jersey is asking for the public to weigh in on its plan to expand the state's bear hunting season. in march the state fish & game council approved adding a second six-day hunt in october. they would also make the hunting zones bigger increase the number of bears people can

claim. right know there is only one hunt which is in december. the public can weigh in on the proposal at a hearing tomorrow night in trenton. happening today. the phillies have a day off from baseball but they're not taking a day off from helping the community. a live look here at citizens bank park this morning where the phillies festival strikeout als happens today. the team will be at the ballpark signing autographs. they'll have a silent auction and you'll get a chance to throw in the bullpen. the fun fires up at 4:30. the tickets are available. don't worry about today's possible rain in the forecast. they'll have the festival rain or shine. >> speaking about rain. on the way out the door grab your umbrella. you'll need tnchts you may need a little bit of patience to possibly get through some traffic. jessica boyington is watching all of the roads out there. jessica? >> guys definitely different spots all across the boards with more precipitation in the

roadways than others. 422 on trooper road montgomery county, this roadway is looking particularly dry. headed eastbound towards the schuylkill expressway, no real volume. the drive times still 8 minutes headed eastbound from 29 up towards the schuylkill expressway and the king of prussia area as well. the rest of our drive times heading into center city on 95 or the schuylkill expressway the roads are a little wet. up towards 95 only a 16 minute trip and no delays there. out in delaware on 95 you can see rain falling in the background of our rainfall here. northbound or southbound no problems. an 11-minute trip from 295 up to 495. we'll check in with more drive times coming up. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with chief meteorologist glen hurricane schwartz. >> now parts of the area got quite a bit of rain overnight. some just in the last couple of hours. mainly in new castle county delaware, and that's where

there's a flood advisory until 6:15. there may be other flood advisories and flood warnings later today, tonight, and into tomorrow. that's why we have a first alert for that. you can see the big cluster of showers and storms moving through philadelphia and northern delaware. it's very much quieter back to the west. that is a sign of things to come. the weather improving quite a bit in northern delaware. still raining but not nearly as hard as it was just a half hour ago. some storms moving towards glassboro and other parts of new jersey. can see this area of moderate rain moving through let's say the southern half of philadelphia. the northern half, north of the turnpike. there really isn't a whole lot. there is a little bit coming in through northern chester county that will affect part of the area, but the hour by hour, look at the temperature contrast from north to south as we go through

this. you can see not much going on during much of the morning and then it will regenerate this afternoon. temperatures ranging from the 60s to the 80s across the area. you can see in between there's a stalled front. showers and storms redevelop. they move across the same area. that leads to flood threats. some computer models suggesting well over a couple inches of rain as we go through the afternoon and into tonight and then tomorrow morning. it is going to be quite an active period after one of the driest mays on record and the second warmest may ever recorded in philadelphia. i'll be back with the seven day in just a couple of minutes. glenn, 5:21. you know they say one person's trash is another person's treasure. that applies here. a woman dropped off some boxes at a recycling company. she just cleaned out her house after her house died.

75 years of racing history brought crumbling to the grouped over the weekend in southern california. the hollywood park racing grandstand was demolished. the track was built in 1938, closed in 2013. today in trenton, some state lawmakers are making a big push to bring gaming to north jersey.

they're holding a news conference today to talk about that. they're talking about a ploeroposed casino to be brought to jersey city. as ac continues to struggle financially, lawmakers in south jersey are fighting the plan to bring gambling to north jersey. 5:25. one woman stands to make cash for her trash and she doesn't know it. landon dowdy is here with cnbc business news. >> one man's trash is literally another man's treasure. a california recycling firm discovers a rare find in boxes thrown away by an unidentified woman. an apple 1 computer. one of 200 ever made. the woman had cleaned out her house after her husband died and didn't know what she had. the company sold it for $200,000 to a private collector and wants to give the woman her half of the proceeds. checking the markets, they break out of their recent losing

streak as the dow comes off of the second losing streak. stocks up after may. look at personal income and spending, manufacturing and construction spending. on friday the dow fell 118 points the nasdaq falling 28 to 5070. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather. >> well, it's been a wet start to the day in parts of the area. other places haven't seen any rain yet, but it is going to. there's the live picture and it's a cloudy one as you can see. and some areas still getting some very heavy rain. there may be a lull, but it's coming back this afternoon. good morning, everyone. looking live at route 309. one of the dryer areas around the pa turnpike. you can see no problems or volume headed northbound or southbound but we do have some weather-related incidents and vehicle accidents on the new jersey turnpike.

"nbc 10" breaking news. this morning we continue to follow this breaking news. a fire destroyed several row homes overnight. a live look at the scene. we'll have new information about people who have been left homeless by the flames. and rain is the name of the game today weather wise. look at this.
